The health crisis has seen developing nations suffer more than most and, with countries such as Ethiopia suffering from case-surge induced shortages, WHO hopes its donation will mitigate challenges threatening the country’s health system.
Stating that Covid-19 continues to be a ‘major public health concern’ in Ethiopia, Dr Jane Maina, Officer in Charge, WHO Ethiopia Emergency Preparedness and Response programme, added, “It is imperative that we join hands with the government including through the provision of critical equipment and supply to support every aspect of pandemic response.”
Acquired at a total cost of $1.1m, the 3,000 cylinders will also provide support for non-Covid related conditions that require oxygen supplementation.
Aschalew Abayneh, Deputy Director General, EPHI, gave thanks to WHO and said that the donated cylinders will help hospitals provide the life-saving care required by patients.
According to WHO, the remaining 2,500 cylinders will be delivered over the next couple of months.
