Telemetry and telematics moving forward

You are here: Home / Industry Feed / Telemetry and telematics moving forward

April 27, 2019 by realisma

That’s according to the next instalment in gasworld’s Smart Industry Series, focused on the world of telemetry and telematics.

The feature, coming up in Issue 6 of gasworld magazine, explains that telemetry has been used for decades across various industries and applications, not least the gases industry, but is rapidly evolving with the advent of Industry 4.0 and visibly going beyond what has been previously accepted.

Not only are these technologies enhanced with greater data and connectivity capabilities, the scope of their application is also growing.

Until recently, such technology had only been commercially viable on bulk vessels, where it was easier to absorb additional costs. As the technology has advanced, the economies of scale have increased, and costs have come down, telemetry technologies are increasingly rolled out across almost any size or type of pressure vessel in the compressed gases industry. And as the scope or scale expands, companies are finding more and more ways to utilise the data generated and improve or customise the technologies out there.

Also evolving are tank telematics, an interdisciplinary field comprising satellite tracking and navigation, driver diagnostics, vehicle engine monitoring, telemetry and much more besides.

Telematics provides real-time visibility for distribution and continues to evolve the way we track, view and safeguard our industry’s assets, taking distribution capabilities – and safety – to a whole new level. State-of-the-art telematics systems perhaps embody the wave of digitisation that Industry 4.0 is bringing to industry, and are very much on the rise in different parts of the world.

Industrial and specialty gas distribution companies need increasing levels of visibility into their fleets as they deliver product locally, cross-country or cross-borders, and depending on the systems provider, telematics can also include technologies to monitor fuel consumption, driving behaviours, G-Force loads, and temperature monitoring. All of which creates a smart tanker or trailer – and therefore supply chain – that is more connected and risk assessed than ever before, as well as an end-user experience that is better informed.

This is particularly relevant in the Asia-Pacific region, where telematics can overcome many of the inherent challenges in distribution, and where digital mindsets and technologies are widely acknowledged to be welcomed.

Future-proofing

These shifting sands in industrial gas supply and distribution will be in focus this June at gasworld’sFuture-Proofing Industrial Gases Summit in Singapore.

Digitisation: Future-proofing in focus this summer

With the industrial gases business on the verge of a whole new wave of growth and development, as various global megatrends shape the way the industry moves forward and digitisation challenges the accepted business models, the Summit will discuss future-proofing strategies through a selection of knowledgeable speakers and pointed panel sessions.

To be held on 25th& 26thJune at the Orchard Hotel, Singapore, the Summit will explore e-commerce, data and customer collaboration, Industrial IoT solutions for a digitised supply chain, virtual reality (VR) technologies enhancing plant maintenance and training, plant automation and mechanisation, and the evolving role of the human in this new digital landscape.

How the industry collectively reconciles its core pillars and traditions with the success factors of tomorrow and future-proofs itself, will be the underlying theme of discussion and debate.
