May 16, 2022 by realisma

Pertamina (PT) and ExxonMobil signed a Joint Study Agreement on May 13th as part of a collaboration that will see the companies advancing CCUS in developing countries.

The partners will focus on applying technologies to three oil and gas fields including West Java Area (Widuri Field) and the East Kalimantan Area (Peciko and Badak).

Set to last for two years, the cooperation agreement between PT and ExxonMobil is also designed to establish regional CCS/CCUS centre storage and discover upgraded oil and gas recovery areas and blue hydrogen generators.

Commenting on the agreement, Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, said, “We are carefully watching this one, the depleted reservoir is a very important problem as one of our targets because the integrated industry in Kalimantan uses a depleted reservoir somewhere in East Kalimantan so we an inject it into a depleted reservoir.”

Following an agreement signed by the two companies at last year’s COP26 Summit, PT is using the opportunity to support the Indonesian government’s programme to accelerate the energy transition and achieve the emission reduction target of 29% by 2030.

Stating that CCS and CCUS technology is expected to play ‘an essential role’ in reducing greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere, Nicke Widyawati, President Director, PT, added, “The energy sector does contribute the most to GHG emissions, so the transition to sustainable energy is the most pressing challenge we face today.”

The transition to sustainable energy is being prioritised by Indonesia as part of its status as holder of the G20 President.

Set to last for two years, the cooperation agreement between PT and ExxonMobil is designed to establish regional CCS/CCUS centre storage and discover upgraded oil and gas recovery areas and blue hydrogen generators.
