A new agreement between research institution VTT and renewable fuels company Neste will see the partners working together to build a technology demonstration facility at VTT Bioruukki Pilot Centre in Espoo, Finland.
The facility will showcase the use of high-temperature electrolysis and fuel synthesis to develop technology that uses carbon dioxide (CO2) capture from flue gas and hydrogen production.
“Neste as the world’s leading producer of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel refined from waste and residues sees Power-to-Liquids as a possible complementing technology for future sustainable fuel production,” commented Lars Peter Lindfors, Senior Vice President Innovation, Neste.
Project partners Kleener Power Solutions Oy and Carbonreuse Finland Oy will work together with other companies to provide the CO2 capture and electrolysis solutions, with VTT providing the fuel synthesis unit and technology.
The fuel products will be realised through Neste’s work to upgrade the synthetic crude oil and anticipates the receival of at least 300kg of synthetic crude oil for fuel processing development.
Neste will receive at least 300kg of synthetic crude oil to be turned into e-fuel products.
The company began its e-fuel journey in 2019 as part of its efforts to commercialise Power-to-X for synthetic e-fuel production.
