The project took place along the 800km stretch from Brunsbüttel Ports GmbH to a Uniper (owner of LIQVIS) power plant in Ingolstadt, Germany.
Transported in specially developed thermally insulated tank wagons, the project was intended to investigate rail as a safe, cost-effective way of transporting LNG across Europe without having to use shipping routes, road haulage or the pipeline network.
Calling it a ‘pipeline to go’, Heinz Jürgen Hiller, Business Development LNG Europe, VTG, said that the company’s LNG tank wagons can supply LNG to whole industries with a ‘voracious appetite’ for energy.
“We are really pleased about this partnership, which plugs a gap in rail freight.”, he added.
