Linde partners with CarbonCure

You are here: Home / Industry Feed / Linde partners with CarbonCure

August 10, 2019 by realisma

The alliance will allow CarbonCure to accelerate international adoption of its innovative technology, which Founder and CEO Robert Niven has previously described as key to reducing the carbon footprint of the cement and concrete industry.

The CarbonCure Technology injects a precise dosage of captured waste carbon dioxide (CO2) into concrete during production. Once introduced, the CO2 chemically converts to a nano-mineral, creating manufacturing efficiencies while reducing the concrete’s carbon footprint.

This enhances the competitiveness of the concrete industry through improved production efficiency and sustainability, and enables private and government concrete end-users alike to reduce the carbon footprint of construction projects without compromising quality.

“[The] Problem with the cement and concrete industry is that it’s high carbon intensity and we’re trying to reduce that carbon footprint,” Niven said at gasworld’s CO2 Summit 2019 in Austria in March. “Concrete is the best market to be looking at CO2 utilisation and CarbonCure is on target to meet our mission of 500 MT/year avoided CO2 impact. We are expanding abroad too, in Singapore and Europe. CarbonCure serves more than 130 plants in Asia and North America, mostly in US and Canada, since 2015.”

CO2 Summit – Session 3 recap

Niven added, “We are really on this kick right now to see how fast we can expand and finding partners to that. It frustrates me when people say CO2 utilisation is something for the future – it is happening now.”

With the announcement of its partnership with Linde yesterday, the company is clearly taking strides forward in meeting that need. Through this alliance, Linde and CarbonCure will work together exclusively to introduce the CarbonCure Technology to 25 countries across Europe, Southeast Asia and Oceania, with initial efforts focused on Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and Singapore.

”With Linde, the world’s largest industrial gas supplier, we will enjoy unrivalled scaling ability to accelerate global deployment”

Robert Niven, Founder and CEO, CarbonCure

Niven said of the new partnership, “We know that scaling up to reduce 500 megatons of CO2 each year will require world-class alliances. With Linde, the world’s largest industrial gas supplier, we will enjoy unrivalled scaling ability to accelerate global deployment.”

“The concrete industry is redoubling efforts to meet the needs of Smart Cities by adopting circular economy solutions to lower the resource consumption and embodied carbon intensity.”

Ulrich Hanke, Head of Commercial Management for Primary Industries, Application Technology at Linde, added, “We are very excited to work with CarbonCure to bring this ground-breaking technology to so many new countries. This cooperation will strengthen Linde’s offering for the construction industry.”

CarbonCure technology is currently installed in nearly 150 concrete plants in North America and Southeast Asia, with more than 2.3 million cubic meters of concrete supplying a wide range of construction projects from airports, roads to high-rise towers. It sees this kind of carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technology pathway as a circa $400bn market opportunity.

North American CO2 Summit 2019

The subject of CO2 utilisation technologies and concrete injection in particular will be in the spotlight again this October, as gasworld hosts its North American CO2 Summit 2019 in Indianapolis.

Bob Haldrup, Senior Vice-President of Indiana-based Irving Materials, Inc. (IMI), will provide an end-user’s perspective on the topic as he discusses Concrete Potential – CO2 Utilisation Technologies.

IMI produces and delivers ready mix concrete in Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, southwestern Ohio, southeastern Illinois, and northern Alabama. Based in Indianapolis, the company is also one of the world leaders in carbon dioxide (CO2) utilisation in concrete.

Participation opportunities at the Summit are fast-selling out. Don’t miss your opportunity to attend and learn more about all of the the trends in the CO2 business in North America from sourcing and supply through to distribution and applications.
