The partnership was formed following the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on the ‘Realisation of Energy Transitions’ by Hagiuda Koichi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan, and Arifin Tasrif, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Indonesia.
Arifin said that the agreement represents an ‘extraordinary effort’ from the Japanese side, adding that international support is required for Indonesia to reach net zero emissions by 2060.
In addition to inviting investor participation, he added that technologies can be jointly developed to accelerate the energy transition.

“Indonesia and Japan can jointly develop carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) technology by utilising natural resources in Indonesia.”
The MoC details the preparation of an energy transition roadmap which will include the development and deployment of various technologies that will be used to reach net zero.
In addition to CCUS, the partners will examine the potential of hydrogen, ammonia fuel, and carbon recycling.
This complements a joint studying currently underway between Mitsubishi Indonesia Representative and the Research and Development Center for Oil and Gas (LEMIGAS) which is assessing the potential of ammonia as a partial substitute to coal.
