Purchased from Golar LNG and BW Gas Cyprus Limited (BW), the two vessels – the Golar Tundra and the BW Singapore – are equipped with a storage capacity of 170,000m3 of LNG with a nominal continuous regasification capacity of 5bn m3/yr (cubic metres per year).
The vessels can operate as both FSRUs and liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers and have a combined capacity that should cover around 15% of Italy’s yearly gas needs.
By reducing its reliance on Russian gas, the EU hopes to increase the share of imported LNG in the European Gas mix.
Germany and France have joined Italy’s efforts to safeguard their energy supply and meet increased demand by expanding their FSRU fleets and developing new LNG terminals.
Santiago Bianco, Executive Vice-president and Regional Director Southern Europe, Middle East and Latin America, Energy Systems at DNV calling DNV’s collaboration with Snam a ‘major move’ in the direction of Italy’s energy security.
“We aim to provide the gas industry with the highest level of technical support and services to address its most challenging issues, with an accelerated timeline,” he added.
Having been involved in more than 40 newbuild and conversion FSRU projects globally, DNV has published a set of Recommended Practices for LNG operators.
Its support for the FSRU segment includes performing due diligence, support for the design, site selection and risk analysis, modelling and simulation of ship machinery systems, and cyber security.
