Denmark’s Greensand CO2 storage project gains support from consortium members

August 17, 2021 by realisma

With the proof-of-concept planning now underway, a grant application will be filed by the consortium with the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program in Denmark.

A successful grant will see work beginning by the end of 2021 and the offshore injection pilot starting in late 2022.

Commenting on the development, Mads Weng Gade, Head of country, Denmark, Commercial Director, INEOS Energy, said, “Greensand has brought together a strong consortium of 29 companies, with strong competencies across key players from Denmark and around the world.”

“We are taking this step by step. Today we have the consortium in place, and if we are successful in receiving ongoing support from the Danish Government and advisory board, Greensand will be able to take another important step forward in supporting the Danish Climate Strategy.”

The project, led by Ineos Oil & Gas and Wintershall DEA, aims to show that CO2 can be injected into the Nini West reservoir offshore Denmark, in addition to supporting the deployment of environmentally safe and cost-effective monitoring technologies.

Carbon capture company Aker Carbon Capture is one of the consortium members. Henrik Madsen, Chairman, Aker Carbon Capture, said, “Greensand can be an enabler for a sustainable Danish industry by offering permanent CO2 storage to a variety of greenhouse gas emitters, and thus supporting a strong common European drive towards Net Zero.”

Last year a large majority of the Danish Parliament decided that a special funding pool will be set aside for the pilot project, forming the basis for a decision to enable CO2 storage by 2025.

As one of Europe’s leading contenders for an effective CO2 storage solution, Greensand could contribute significantly to the future of carbon storage technology, as well as supporting Denmark’s emission reduction targets for 2030 and beyond.
