CarbonCure partners with HC&D

The 111-year old concrete producer is located on the island of Oahu and has a fleet of more than 50 mixer trucks. HC&D also has facilities for aggregate, sand and ready-mix concrete production on Maui. 

“We are thrilled to partner with CarbonCure in order to do our part to reduce emissions from the built environment in Hawaii,” said Wade Wakayama, President on HC&D. 

“The ability to locally produce low-carbon concrete will allow us to help the state to meet its ambitious CO₂targets and climate adaption goals.”

The Hawaii Department of Transportation has also partnered with CarbonCure partner Island Ready Mix, Hawaii Gas and Matheson Gas to conduct its first infrastructure demonstration of CO₂mineralisation for concrete paving on Honolulu’s Kapolei Interchange.

The initial pilot demonstration saved 1,500 pounds of carbon emissions, which is equivalent to the emissions from 1,600 miles of highway driving.

“We’ve seen the benefit to CO₂mineralised concrete and will be using it when appropriate in Hawaii’s road and bridge projects,” said Ed Sniffen, Department of Transportation Deputy Director for Highways.

“Having a local supplier like HC&D partnering with CarbonCure to provide these materials is a huge step. The availability of environmentally friendly materials such as carbon injected concrete is necessary for HDOT to move forward in reducing the carbon footprint of our construction projects.”

CarbonCure’s Hawaii-based partnerships are supported by Elemental Excelerator, a start-up accelerator which provides funding to companies capable of improving fundamental systems.
