Completed last month, the Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field (FH2R) has the ability to produce as much as 1,200Nm3 of hydrogen per hour using renewable energy.
Ashai Kasei Engineering received an order for its 10MW large alkaline water electrolysis system from Toshiba Energy Systems Corporation and New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO) in 2017.

“This water electrolysis system is one of the largest in the world as a stack size and can produce and supply 1,200Nm3 of hydrogen (at rated operation) per hour,” Ashai Kasei said.
“After launching this water electrolysis system in November 2019, as a result of conducting various tests, we were able to confirm hydrogen quality that meets the required level.
Hydrogen supply started in March and Ashai Kasei said after evaluating the response characteristics to input power fluctuations in parallel with the hydrogen supply, full-scale operation will be started as the core equipment of FH2R from this summer.
Asahi Kasei’s expertise related to hydrogen production goes back to the company’s establishment in 1922, when it used hydroelectric power for water electrolysis to generate hydrogen for the production of ammonia.
