Having been awarded the FEED contract for the gas-to-power plant, the consortium and Aker will spend the next 12 months coming up with a detailed plan for the proposed 910MW (megawatt) plant.
Located in the Humber region, Keadby 3 is set to play a role in helping the UK Government reach its ambitious targets to become a world leader in carbon capture and storage (CCS).
“This project helps strengthen British energy security and contributes at the same time to the decarbonisation of the industry,” said Valborg Lundegaard, CEO, Aker.
Capable of capturing up to 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, the plant could deliver £1.2bn for the UK economy, according to a recently released report.
Commenting on the announcement, Catherine Raw, Managing Director, SSE Thermal, said, “Our ambition with Keadby 3 is to deliver one of the UK’s first power stations equipped with carbon capture and through awarding this contract we continue to build momentum behind that goal.”
“The reality is that multiple power-CCS projects will be needed to reach net zero and we hope to see the UK Government recognise that when it provides an update on Cluster Sequencing this summer.”
